A father doused the mother of his children in gasoline and set her on fire because she ‘wouldn’t pay her taxes,’ prosecutors said.
Javaunte Jefferson, 28, set Savannah Bailey ablaze on Valentine’s Day in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then drove away leaving Bailey and her children outside in subzero temperatures, according to police.
Police responded Bailey’s apartment building and found her with life-threatening burns covering 60% of her body.
Bailey told officers that Jefferson ‘just got to pouring gasoline one me,’ and said she tried to use snow to extinguish the fire as Jefferson drove away.
A neighbor told police Bailey knocked on her door and she saw Bailey was on fire as she started to roll on the ground.
The neighbor called police and wrapped Bailey’s children in a coat, although they were not wearing shoes in the -1F temperatures, according to Fox 6.
Another neighbor told investigators that she heard a woman screaming then saw Jefferson put a bag into a vehicle before leaving.
Authorities extinguished the fire, which investigators determined originated on a mattress in Bailey’s first-floor bedroom.
Jefferson’s eight-year-old brother later told police that he overheard a conversation between Jefferson and his mother, during which Jefferson’s mother told him, ‘Don’t lie to me, Javaunte.’
The boy said his brother replied that he ‘killed (Bailey) because she wouldn’t pay her taxes and was buying other stuff.’
Bailey’s sister told investigators that Bailey was having and argument with Jefferson about work and buying things for a friend.’
Jefferson has been charged with six counts included attempted murder, arson and reckless injury.
He was held on a $500,000 cash bond and he is due back in court on February 27.
