While students are facing a new year at university unlike any other - with the likes of virtual get-togethers replacing traditional Freshers Week activities and the new restrictions on pub hours curtailing their social life - there is at least some good news in store.

A popular student shopping event, which has run for the past five years at intu Eldon Square in Newcastle and intu Metrocentre in Gateshead, is this time being extended for a fortnight, meaning there's plenty opportunity to bag a bargain and make that loan stretch further.

An array of student deals and discounts are on offer for a full two weeks at the shopping centre where huge savings can be enjoyed at a range of stores and restaurants including favourites such as Top Shop and Frankie and Benny's.

The Student Shopping Fortnight, now under way and running until October 6, will include discounts of up to 30% at shops and up to 50% at restaurants. There are also savings to be made on leisure attractions Angry Birds Adventure Golf and Namco Funscape at the Metrocentre.

Students can sign up to the event and - with social distancing in mind - they this year will choose a convenient time to visit.

Booking a slot means the number of shoppers can be better managed in the centres where more than 100 stores and restaurants are involved in the event.

Among the stores are MONKI, New Look and Topman while participating restaurants - which in line with the 'local lockdown' will offer only table service and will close by 10pm - include Chaophraya, Crêpeaffaire and Pizza Express.

Deals include 20% off and a free mist spray when spending more than £40 at Victoria’s Secret which, besides lingerie, sells sleepwear and work-out outfits.

And taking part in the event for the first time will be global cosmetics brand Morphe at Eldon Square with a 30% off deal on purchases over £35 of its products which recently spawned a Morphe 2 spin-off showcased by the likes of TikTok stars Charli & Dixi D’amelio and singer-songwriter Madison Beer.

In view of the local restrictions imposed last week, students are asked to visit the centres only with people they either live with or with whom they share a support bubble.

Gavin Prior, operations director at the shopping centres, said: “Freshers’ Week and university life might be a little different this year but we’ll be putting a smile on the face of students with some fantastic deals and discounts.
