Ed Woodward has reportedly resigned from his position at Manchester United as backlash against the European Super League continues.

Reports on Tuesday night claimed Manchester City and Chelsea are set to withdraw from the controversial breakaway tournament, with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona set to follow.

And having played a prominent role in the European Super League, ESPN reported that Woodward has resigned as Executive Vice Chairman at Old Trafford in response to the criticism, bringing forward a planned summer departure in the process.

Meanwhile, the Independent report that Andrea Agnelli has resigned as Juventus chairman following his own role in the fiasco, while pressure is mounting on Real Madrid president on Florentino Perez, who conducted a controversial television interview about the European Super League on Monday and had only just won the club elections.

A number of clubs including Chelsea and Manchester City are reportedly set to withdraw from the European Super League following widespread backlash.

The sides were part of six English clubs, alongside Liverpool, to announce over the weekend they intended to form the breakaway competition at the expense of the Champions League.

The footballing world has condemned the project ever since it was officially launched on Sunday night, with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and vice-captain James Milner both vocalising their disapproval of the plans before and after Liverpool 's clash with Leeds United on Monday night.
