Dennis Mitchell died in a traumatic twist during tonight's harrowing episode of EastEnders.

The 13-year-old, who made his first appearance in Albert Square in August 2012, drowned in the Thames during the explosive 35th anniversary special.

Sharon Mitchell broke down in tears after discovering her son had been killed just moments after giving birth to a baby boy.

It seemed like the schoolboy, affectionately known as 'Denny', had survived after Ian Beale used a fire extinguisher to break down the door of the room he locked Dennis in.

However, just as it looked like they had escaped, a surge of water rushed towards the terrified pair and they were both pulled out of the water unconscious.

A paramedic claimed there were two suspected fatalities as they started to pump Dennis' lifeless body.

In heartbreaking scenes, the paramedic shook her head as Linda Carter broke down on Mick's shoulder and Keanu Taylor looked on in horror.

Emotional Phil Mitchel burst into tears as he watched the paramedics pull a blanket over his adoptive son.

Denny could not be resuscitated on shore

At the hospital, Ian woke up and asked Kathy what happened to Dennis, explaining that he tried to hold the lad up but they were separated.

Ian broke down as Kathy explained that Dennis didn't make it, adding: "You were rescued together. Ian, you did everything you could trying to save that poor boy. I am so proud of you."

Evil Ian failed to mention that he locked Dennis in the room in the boat which inadvertently led to his untimely death.

But Ian is unaware that Dennis tried to send a voice message to Sharon explaining what happened before he died.

There was more heartbreak to come as Sharon demanded to know where her son was when a soaking wet Keanu came to visit his newborn baby.

The scene cut to dark as Sharon held her mouth and yelled: "Oh my baby!"

Blaming herself, Sharon confessed: "This is my fault. I promised Louise on his life."

But turning on Keanu, she said: "I thought this is what love looked like. If you and me had never…if I’d never let you into my life I’d still have my son.

Screaming at her former lover, Sharon shouted: "I never want to see you again. GET OUT!"

There were no other fatalities as Mick broke wife Linda's ankle to set her free before they were pulled onto a life boat by Stuart and Rainie.

Ben Mitchell was hauled to safety by the Branning brothers, while Sheree Trueman confirmed to worried Denise Fox that Patrick was in an ambulance.

Choking Bex Fowler was rescued by Kush Kazemi and Kat Slater, who made it safely back to fearful Big Mo Harris on the shore.

Whitney Dean also survived but handed herself into the police along with the knife used to stabbed nasty Leo King with.

Lifeless Callum remained in the abandoned warehouse

However, EastEnders viewers suspect Dennis may not be the only victim as Callum Highway laid lifeless in an abandoned warehouse.

Waking up in the dark after falling from a great height, Callum whispered, "help, anybody," before his limp hand dropped down.

Back in Albert Square, distraught Ben walked round crying before shouting Callum's name.

Is Dennis the only victim from the boat tragedy?
