A man luckily escaped with only minor injuries after his van was hit by a passing vehicle while on the hard shoulder of the M62.

The Merseyside Police Roads Policing Unit (RPU) posted a picture of the damage caused to the van as a result of the impact.

The driver had steered the vehicle on to the hard shoulder of the M62 after it broke down, when it was hit this morning (Saturday).

In the post on its social media account, the RPU said: "If you ever needed a reminder why not to stop on a hard shoulder unless an emergency, then here it is...

"By sheer luck, the occupant of the van only suffered minor injuries after breaking down and being clipped by a passing vehicle on the M62."
