A small dog was horrifically attacked while out for a walk in South Derbyshire, its owner has said.

The pet needed emergency veterinary treatment for deep wounds on his back and side after the attack on the Bretby Park Estate, near Bretby Hall.

The owner told Staffordshire Live that the beloved pet was "attacked and savaged" by a large dog, which was not on a lead, on Saturday night, July 31.

The injured pet's owner says they are now worried another pet might be attacked as the owner of the other dog is alleged to have not assisted after the incident or taken any responsibility for the attack.

A picture of the injured dog shows a nasty looking cut, with the fur shaved so the vet was able to treat him.

The owner said: "A small dog was horrifically attacked and savaged by a large dog on Saturday night in Bretby Park estate, near Bretby Hall. The large dog was running off lead.

"Owner failed to assist or take action or own up. Now in the hands of the police. The little dog required emergency veterinary treatment to deep wounds on his back and side. This type of attack could happen again. Too many dogs are off lead and beyond their owner's control."
