Dimitar Berbatov has explained the benefits of Edinson Cavani potentially extending his Manchester United contract.
The 34-year-old forward has enjoyed an outstanding season for United, scoring 14 goals and providing five assists across all competitions, which is an impressive contribution, especially when considering his limited involvement this term.
Since arriving from PSG on a free transfer, Cavani has emphatically squashed any doubts over his ability to still perform at the highest level and it's not surprising Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is attempting to persuade the Uruguay star to extend his stay at United.
Cavani is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season, but it is thought he could soon commit to another year in Manchester and that decision could have huge ramifications on the Reds' title aspirations for next season.
Among the plaudits Cavani has received, former United centre-forward Berbatov has also revealed his admiration for the forward, explaining he would set a "good example" to the youngsters at the club if he does decide to extend his contract.
“I rate Cavani very highly and how he moves around the pitch is a strong quality,” Berbatov told Betfair. "He is 34 so not as quick, but he is smart and knows how to use his movement, he is so precise and knows when to move and use his pace.
“Thursday night (against Roma) was a prime example. If he decides to stay, I think United will obviously say yes and (he) is a good example for the young player. “He is also scoring lots of goals. I don’t think people will be disappointed if he stays.
“Purely placed on performances, he seems happy to stay. At this time in his career, he may think shall I go home and finish at a club where I want to or does he feel fresh enough to stay and help the team.”
