Coronavirus UK news live: ‘Lockdown could kill 75,000’ as Covid deaths hit 41,936

The Sun

NEARLY 75,000 people in the UK could die as a result of lockdown, research suggested.

Figures presented to the Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies showed the impact missed diagnoses, cancelled treatments and the recession may have on Brits.

The document said: "We estimate there were approximately 10,000 non-Covid-19 excess deaths of care home residents in March and April 2020."

It comes as the coronavirus death toll hit 41,936 yesterday and the total number of positive Covid-19 cases reached 423,236.

An NHS spokesman said: "While some people had understandable concerns about coming forward for care during the pandemic, the NHS stayed opened to care for all who needed it."
