Coronavirus UK LIVE update – Boris Johnson to announce 10pm curfew for pubs & restaurants as alert level rises to 4

BORIS Johnson is set to announce a 10pm curfew for pubs and restaurants today as part of a coronavirus crackdown.

The PM will address the nation this evening to lay out the government's plans to curb the spread of the virus amid a sustained rise in cases.

It comes as Sadiq Khan urged Londoners to wear masks in pubs and restaurants - as the coronavirus alert level rose to four yesterday.

Chief medical officer Chris Whitty warned that the country could see 200 daily deaths in just weeks as part of the second wave this winter.

Meanwhile, cases yesterday rose to 398,625 and deaths rose by 11 to 41,788.

Brazil recorded 13,439 additional confirmed cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, as well as 377 deaths from the disease, the Health Ministry confirmed.

The country, one of the world's worst-hit, has registered more than 4.5 million cases of the virus since the pandemic began.

The official death toll now stands at 137,272, according to ministry data.

Mr Khan said he is “really concerned” about a range of economic factors affecting London, including levels of footfall, transport, Canary Wharf and the risk of the virus spreading faster.

Mr Khan told Sky News: “The health crisis is leading to an economic crisis, which has led to a mental health crisis.

“The way to avoid the virus spreading even faster is to take (on) these additional measures.”

Cops in England have been given powers to issue fines and make arrests to help enforce Covid-19 regulations in restaurants and pubs.

According to The Guardian, fines of £1,000 can be issued if tables are not spaced 2 metres apart.

A memo explaining the new regulations issued by the government seen by the paper says: “Under the regulations, enforcement may be undertaken by designated local authority officers, police officers or persons designated by the secretary of state.”

It continues: “Fixed-penalty notices may be issued by the authorised officer, in the sum of £1,000 on the first occasion (a reduced penalty of £500 being due if paid within 14 days of the notice date), £2,000 on a second occasion, rising to £4,000 for a third and any subsequent occasion.”
