Eight of the 10 highest rates of coronavirus infection in England are in the north, as cases fall in every local authority in the country, the latest figures show.

Middlesbrough continues to have the highest rate, with 981 new cases in the seven days to July 26 – the equivalent of 695.8 per 100,000 people. This is down from 1,421.5 in the seven days to July 19.

Redcar & Cleveland has the second highest rate, down from 1,520.2 to 668.6, with 917 new cases.

Blackpool has the third highest rate, down from 872.0 to 606.0, with 845 new cases.

Stockton-on-Tees (with a rate of 599.4) and North East Lincolnshire (541.5) round out the top five.

They are followed by Doncaster (522.6), South Tyneside (521.9), Darlington (506.5), Hartlepool (494.3) and Plymouth (478.8).

All the 315 local areas in England have seen a week-on-week fall in rates.

The lowest rates in England are in King’s Lynn and West Norfolk (142.7), Eden (142.7), Breckland (157.2), Thanet (162.1) and East Cambridgeshire (168.1).

The figures, for the seven days to July 26, are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (July 27-30) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

It came as Boris Johnson was warned not to create a new category in the international travel traffic light system as Brits plan summer getaways.

The Prime Minister has reportedly been urged by some of his own ministers not to bother creating a new amber watchlist, which would apply to countries at risk of being moved into the red category.

The Telegraph reported that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is pushing for the “amber watchlist” idea to be shelved, while Chancellor Rishi Sunak reportedly told the Prime Minister that the UK’s entry and exit rules are “out of step with our international competitors” and are hurting the economy.
