Coronation Street’s Roy Cropper actor breaks silence on heart-breaking exit – and potential soap comeback

CORONATION Street’s David Neilson has broken his silence on his heart-breaking exit as Roy Cropper from the ITV soap.

For almost three decades, the 72-year-old actor has played the legendary character, however, that all appears to be coming to an unfortunate end.

Fans of the show were left in floods of tears last week as Roy bid farewell to his niece Nina in heartfelt and emotional scenes.

Despite appearing to hint that he has made his last appearance on the programme, viewers were hopeful that Roy might decide against heading to South America and return to the cobbles.

David, however, has suggested that Roy has left the Manchester-based soap for good - much to the disappointment of fans.

“I’m 72, obviously,” he told Inside Soap.

“When Corrie aired Norris' funeral, we had a scene with the hearse pulling up – and because of Malcolm Hebden, I thought 'I'm really sorry that I won't get to work with him again'.

"But there are two exits in this for me - one for the character and one for David. Hopefully, they won't coincide - maybe they will.

"I know Roy leaving will get a reaction. It's a big part of your life and a big part of that popular culture. He will be remembered for a long while."

As a firm staple of UK television for decades, David said he still finds it "amazing" when he gets recognised.

He added: "When my son was at university, I remember going to pick up his stuff for the holidays one year and realising that I'd been in the lives of everybody there in their 30s - it's a very strange thing."

Roy recently left Corrie in heartbreaking scenes, where he had an emotional conversation with his relative, Nina.

He told her: "One day, I hope you’ll find it in your heart to forgive me.

"This is my only hope of peace. I must go away and atone."

"As you know, I have gifted you my estate so you will always have a roof over your head and money coming in and a place to call your own in this kind and caring community."

Nina then moved to unlock the door, but she had one last thing to say.

She shared: "You know when I was beaten up it was you that brought me back.

"It was your voice I could hear as I drifted in and out of consciousness. My dad left me because he had no choice. Please don’t do this to me, Roy."

"You’re the one person in the whole world that I trust and I love you."
