Comedian Roy Chubby Brown has accused at fly-tippers of turning Grimsby into a "s**t tip".

The veteran funnyman, 75, has lived in the town for years and says he loved nothing better than returning from touring top spend time with his wife Helen and their two children there.

However, Brown is fed up seeing Grimsby littered with rubbish and waste.

He's now urging residents to pick up after themselves and take some pride in their town.

Brown says: "With living in the Grimsby area, every time I come along the road and see the mess I want to scream.

"When I am out and about and see any rubbish I make sure it is cleared up. It might be a discarded takeaway box or a plastic bottle.

"But I pick it up and put it in a bin. It doesn't take five minutes. But I am left thinking what the f*****g hell is going on here.

"When you see plastic toys or a chair dumped in a lay-by you want to see something done about it."

Roy Chubby Brown has raged at fly-tippers who are ruining his hometown

In one lay-by near his home, the funnyman veteran said there are up to 20 tyres and builders' rubble strewn across the verge which includes kiddies toys, mattresses and bags of household waste.

He added: "Surely the council can see this mess. When people drive into Grimsby they are getting a bad impression.

"First impressions count a lot with people. Throughout life you find first impressions are important.

"When you meet someone and they make a good first impression you are going to like them. It is the same with places.

"A good first impression and you are going to come back time and again.

"But with Grimsby, it is bad enough with the name.

"But you leave mess lying around and the lay-bys are choc-a-bloc with rubbish, everyone thinks it is a s**t tip."

It comes after figures released by North East Lincolnshire Council revealed that the council’s small street cleaning team collected more than 5,485 tonnes of litter in 2019.

Among the most unusual items collected last year included a jet ski, bottles of urine and a burnt out car.

They find some shocking things while carrying out tasks such as emptying litter bins, sweeping roads, cleaning up dog mess and clearing fly-tips.

Brown continued: "I travel around a lot and there isn't a town or city that I have not been to and you notice how clean many of them are.

Round Grimsby there are some great places. It also has some tips."

Councillor Ron Shepherd, North East Lincolnshire Council portfolio holder for Safer Communities invited him to join a litter clean up session with council workers following the criticism.

He added: "He will have to clean up his language while he is cleaning up the streets."

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, the council’s portfolio holder for environment, said: “This is just a snapshot of what our street cleansing team were faced with in 2019.

"They are on the front line when it comes to taking care of the environment, but often what they have to deal with is truly revolting."
