A man from Great Orton, near Carlisle, who said he could have died due to Covid-19 has given back to the staff that cared for him in hospital.

Paul Wharton was first admitted to hospital in January after his Covid-19 symptoms worsened dramatically during the Christmas period.

Only one month after being admitted onto the intensive care unit at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, Mr Wharton, pledged to raise money for the hospital in order to say thank you to all those that cared for him.

He explained: "It was a chance for the public to say thank you for the hard work of the doctors, nurses and ambulance staff during the Covid crisis last winter.

"While in hospital, the doctors and nurses went that extra mile to help you through the illness.

"I remember them going to the shop for patients and bringing back some fizzy drinks and getting me some extra food one evening when the steroids started to make me hungry."

Mr Wharton was extremely ill with Covid-19 and feared for his life, remembering how it nearly killed him - but since then he has been determined to recover and has grown stronger each day.

He continued: "I nearly lost my life due to Covid-19.

"It has changed my life by making me more determined to enjoy the outdoors a lot more. My recovery was aided by my determination to walk so I could cough up the build up from my chest.

"I am managing to walk around the Lake District fells again. I am still not back to normal, but I am healthier than I expected to be at this stage."

Mr Wharton set up a GoFundMe page to raise money so he could buy hampers and donate them to staff at the hospital.

Raising almost £750 he was able to visit the staff last month and hand over the hampers.

"As the hampers were being delivered it was great to see some of the faces light up in the hospital foyer," he added.

Mr Wharton would also like to thank Oopsie Daisey Flowers who prepared all the hampers that included tea, biscuits, chocolate and more.
