Police have sealed off a road outside Scottish Parliament and the bomb squad has been called to the scene in Edinburgh.

Witnesses have reported the area around the Holyrood pub remains cordoned off, with people being told to evacuate buildings.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police were called around 1:35pm this afternoon to reports of a suspicious item found on Holyrood Road, Edinburgh.

"Police are at the scene.

"A cordon has been put in place as a precaution.

"The EOD will be attending to examine the item."

A witness wrote: "Police have just ordered us to evacuate our building - said they were dealing with an ‘incident’ on Holyrood road in Edinburgh.

"Royal logistics corps bomb disposal at the scene.

"Police say there are potentially ‘two or three’ items they are dealing with at the University of Edinburgh building."

An email has been sent to Scottish Parliament staff saying: "Our Security Office has informed us that the top of Holyrood Road has been cordoned off due to a police incident.

"Please avoid Holyrood Road when you are leaving the Parliament today.

"Anyone exiting our car park will be directed to turn left into Holyrood Park. We don’t know how long the cordon will be in place."

It is not yet known what type of device is at the scene.
