Voters in Blackburn and Darwen have been heading to the polls to vote in a raft of new councillors to represent their local areas.

A total of 17 councillors are to be elected to Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council during the May 6 local elections.

One councillor will be elected for each of the council's 17 wards.

This equates to a third of the 51 councillors at the council, with elections taking place every every year for three years.

Prior to May 6, the Labour Group was in control of the council, holding 33 seats, with Councillor Mohammed Khan the leader of the council.

One new councillors will be voted in across the following wards:

- Audley & Queen's Park

- Bastwell & Daisyfield

- Billinge & Beardwood

- Blackburn Central

- Blackburn South & Lower Darwen

- Blackburn South East

- Darwen East

- Darwen South

- Darwen West

- Ewood

- Little Harwood with Whitebirk

- Livesey with Pleasington

- Mill Hill and Moorgate

- Roe Lee

- Shear Brow and Corporation Park

- Wensley Fold

- West Pennine

Voting opened at 7am on Thursday, May 6 with the last votes cast at 10pm on the same day.

Votes are set to be counted on Friday morning with final declaration from mid-afternoon.
