Beverley hair stylist Dominic Ackah-Amihere has not been twiddling his thumbs during the coronavirus pandemic, having been sought out by stars to transform their lockdown looks.

While his salon, Urban QTR, in Butcher Row, has been closed, Mr Ackah-Amihere has been using his creative talents to fashion wigs, including a number for celebrity clients.

And in the case of Katie Price, Mr Ackah-Amihere also cut and coloured her own hair during a visit to the model’s Surrey home.

“Katie found me via Instagram, contacted me and invited me to her house last week to film for her YouTube channel.

“She was doing a segment on hair and beauty, telling people they shouldn’t be afraid to wear wigs and how they can change your looks instantly – she’s a chameleon,” said Mr Ackah-Amihere.

“I handmade two wigs, both using natural hair and coloured, cut, styled and finished by me. One was blonde and quite natural, and there was a copper one as well.

“I also cut and coloured Katie’s own hair while I was there – her hair does get over-styled for magazine shoots and she needed a good cut and colour.

“I did a deep raven colour, as she’s quite dark naturally, and styled her hair straight.”

Mr Ackah-Amihere’s skills as a stylist have also been called on by former Geordie Shore star and I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! 2015 winner Vicky Pattison in recent weeks.

“She needed to change her look at home while she has been doing some promotional work – she says she’s not good at styling her own hair,” said Mr Ackah-Amihere. “I’ve made her brunette and blonde wigs and they went in the post to her, to Essex.

“Vicky has had a wig from me before, last October, and I also styled her own hair for her for a baby shower.”

Mr Ackah-Amihere said: “It’s really exciting to have celebrities seek you out for your work.

“I work really hard and I am quite humble.

“With us getting filmed for Katie’s YouTube channel, I got a real buzz from that, when you think she could have picked anyone.”

Mr Ackah-Amihere’s salon lockdown also saw him making a wig for model and Love Island star Megan Barton-Hanson, and he has also been working on another batch of wigs for the Teenage Cancer Trust at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham.

“I should be dropping them off in about a month – they each take a day to make,” he said.

Mr  Ackah-Amihere was himself diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma a number of years ago and, after gruelling treatment and getting the all-clear, he decided to put his efforts into helping young people diagnosed with cancer by providing them with bespoke wigs.

“My salon is very busy now we’re up and running again – generally there’s a six-week waiting list.

“I let the hair do the talking,” said Mr Ackah-Amihere. “You are only as good as your last haircut.”
