Businesses across Sunderland have pledged to help struggling families to ensure no child goes hungry.

Sunderland City Council said it had seen an "outpouring of generosity" from businesses and residents with the council adding it will support community groups across the city.

It comes after a bid to extend free school meals for children over the holidays was dealt a blow after MPs voted against the measure.

A campaign led by Manchester United's Marcus Rashford kicked the nation into action to make sure children who normally receive free school meals don’t go hungry during half term.

And several local businesses across Sunderland are doing their bit to help families in need.

Below is 21 businesses which are offering free meals to children:

1. The Grey Horse Inn

The Grey Horse we will be offering a free meal and drink for children as well as a free tea or coffee for parents or guardians.

It's available Tuesday to Friday 12-3pm.

A post on their Facebook page said: "We are a community that cares, no judgement just a warm welcome to our lovely pub and a helping hand extended to all that need it.

"Children must be accompanied by an adult."

2. Sunderland's City Tea Rooms

Ashley Hammond and Dave Carter, who run the City Tea Rooms in Sunderland city centre’s St Thomas Street, are doing their bit to help, by proving free kids meals, complete with drink, during the holiday.

They are running the offer throughout Friday, you just need to message them on Facebook or pop along between 11-1pm.

Meals are for collection only and to keep families, staff and other customers safe, the number of collections will be limited, with strict social distancing in place.

3. Youth Almighty Project

Free hot lunches will be provided Monday to Friday between 12pm and 1pm to support struggling families in the community.

Lunches will need to be picked up from Silksworth Youth and Community Centre.

4. Deli-cious

This half term Monday to Friday between 11- 12pm Deli-cious will provide free children's meals to families who need a helping hand through collection only.

A post on their Facebook page said: "Please don’t feel embarrassed no questions will be asked. We are all in this together."

5. Newcastle Road Convenience Store

Children can benefit from a free sandwich and a bag of crisps from the store.

They posted on their Facebook page: "This week if anyone is struggling; come into the shop and we will provide your child a sandwich and a bag of crisps, just ask staff who will assist.

"We have had a couple of requests from customers who would also like to help out, from tomorrow morning we will have a pot behind the counter, feel free if able to leave a donation to help with the cost of this.

"If we raise more money than it costs for the service we will donate to local charities to help those who need it longer term as unfortunately, this issue won’t vanish when the kids return after half term."

6. The Washington Community Food Project

In addition to the regular food bank each Thursday at Miss Tina's tea room in Washington there will also be a food bank on Monday between 11-2pm.

This is aimed specifically at those who may be struggling to feed their children during half term. Nappies, wipes, etc will also be offered.

7. The Box Youth Project

The Box Youth Project will provide 30 meals a day to children in need.

Meals will need to be booked and collected between 12.30-1.30pm.

They said: "We don’t want any local children to go hungry in the school holidays - if you live in the Doxford Ward and your child receives free school meals, you/they are welcome to call and collect a free lunch from us every day next week between 12.30-1.30.

"Meals will need to be booked by 4pm the day before by ringing 01915225031, by messaging us on Facebook or by emailing us at [email protected]

"We are able to provide 30 meals a day and we will allocate meals on a first come first served basis."

8. Marina Vista

Marina Vista is running a kids eat free offer all the way through the half-term holidays.

You can book your table by calling them on 01915100600.

9. Rivaaj

Rivaaj is providing free meals to any child who needs it in the local community.

The restaurant will provide one meal up to £10 worth of food, once a week to one child.

10. Spice Club

Another business helping out is Spice Club which is offering a free meal of curry, rice and chips to children under 16 who would normally receive free school meals.

The offer is running until Friday, orders to be placed between 12-1pm and collected for 1-2pm for collection.

11. Ques

Ques is offering a free meal to any child up the age of 16 next Monday to Thursday between 5-6pm.

A post on their Facebook page said: "After hearing the news of the recent cancellation of school meals, we have decided to give something back to our ‘Quemunity’ and our loyal customers during this difficult time once again."

12. Rana's Fish and Chips

Rana's is providing all children under the age of 16 with a free kids meal from Monday to Thursday when accompanied by an adult.

A spokesperson for the fish and chip shop said: "Due to the recent government announcement regarding the termination of free school meals in England during October half term, which potentially could result in many children without food and parents skipping their meals to make ends meet- we at Rana’s Fish and Chips have decided to provide all children a free kids meal."

13. Spice 1

This week, Spice 1 is providing every child with a free meal for collection.

Orders must be placed between 2pm to 4pm and collected before 7pm.

A post on their Facebook page said: "We are saddened by the government decision not to extend the free school meals programme in England during the October half term which means many children will potentially go hungry this week.

"So we at Spice1 have decided to provide a helping hand and feed hungry children as we believe that every child should have access to good quality food and no child should go hungry."

Ell's Kitchen in Sunderland is offering a free child’s meal with all purchases.

15. The Ivy House

The Ivy House is providing kids with a free pizza and juice box for collection between 3-5pm over the holidays.

A post said: "Some of us remember what it was like to need free school meals, and given the world right now we think this is something that we should step up to provide when others have decided against it.

"We're more than willing to provide a helping hand to those who ask this school holiday."

16. Angelo’s Trattoria

The restaurant in Houghton-le-Spring is providing free meals to children next week.

Writing on Facebook, a spokesperson said: "We would like to offer a hot meal to any child who needs one next week completely free of charge.

"We can only offer this Tuesday to Friday and they will be available to collect between 4-5pm. Slots will be limited due to social distancing so please only order if you are in need.

"Each day there will be a choice of a child’s portion of one pasta dish or a child’s pizza.

"We will try and cater for dietary requirements if you let us know of any when ordering.

"To order we will need you to message us on Facebook by 3pm each day with the number of meals you require and you will need us to have confirmed with you before you can collect as we will have limited slots available due to social distancing."

17. Mickey's Place

Mickey's Place at St Michael and All Angels Sulgrave, off Manor Road, is giving free meals Monday to Friday during the school half-term.

The community hub is also giving activity packs to children including free pumpkins, and make your own pizza packs and free family bags donated by Asda.

Children's meals include Halloween themed food every day.

18. The Roker End Cafe

The cafe in Roker is offering free packed lunches to children.

A post on their Facebook said: "If any family in Sunderland, or surrounding, needs support we will pull together!

"Like many other amazing businesses, we want to provide as much support as we can!

"We’ve been hard at work this morning preparing and bagging up some packed lunches that we’ll be handing out until further notice, no questions asked and no judgement passed."

19. Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen

If you are local to the Sunderland area, the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen is located on Old Mill Rd and helps to supply food to those who need it.

20. Sunderland Food Bank

Sunderland Food Bank provides emergency food for local people in crisis working with a network of nine food banks across Sunderland.

21. Life Kitchen Cookery School

Ryan Riley is opening the Life Kitchen cookery school in Mowbray Park to provide 150 packed lunches for kids each day plus extra bake at-home meals.

Sunderland City Council is supporting Ryan's work in ending child food poverty.
