Relief today for Fijians after the Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, clarified that there would be no increase in water rates.

He emphasised that he would not support any such increase.

“As the Minister responsible, I state that our people are already suffering from the cost-of-living pressures, and I will not endorse any such increase,” Ro Filipe said.

“We need to review our operational costs and focus on improving services to our people first.”

He said with the approval of the 2023-2024 National Budget, the focus should be on the delivery of the budgeted programmes and capital projects.

“We need to work hard to secure international partnerships to develop our infrastructure and access climate financing,” the minister said.

“Those are areas I am focusing on right now as Minister and ensure that those who do not have access to water, including treated water, to do so.”
