Naro Relocation Project Begins

“We would also like to acknowledge hardwood timber for house construction and the land which will, in the future, host the new village,” Ms Toganivalu said.

Civil works carried out at Naro, Wainunu, Bua.

Civil works at the new relocation site at Naro for the people of Cogea Village in Bua have started.

Key stakeholders were praised for their unwavering support towards the project called Cokonaki Cogea.

It would not have been possible without the strategic input by the Ministry of Forestry for the two weeks of training.

Training took place in the district and it is thanks to the technical guidance of the Fiji Hardwood Corporation Limited and the Bua Provincial Council.

Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) project officer Selai Toganivalu said civil works began this week at Naro by Core Builders. They thanked the 30 Cogea villagers who provided the labour force to carry out this important work.

“We would also like to acknowledge hardwood timber for house construction and the land which will, in the future, host the new village,” Ms Toganivalu said.

“All these are non monetary contributions should be acknowledged and celebrated, because this is a community led climate relocation project.”

FCOSS remains resolute that sustainable and effective responses to climate change will always be in people centred and community led approaches.

Background

Cogea Village in Bua is the first in Fiji to be a part of a community-led relocation project funded externally.

FCOSS secured a $3m from Brot fur die Welt, a Germany-based Non Government Organisation for this project.

Cokonaki Cogea literally translates to preparing Cogea and captures the essence and underlying objectives for people centered and community-led solutions for climate change and natural disasters.

The three general phases of Cokonaki Cogea are community planning and consensus phase; community build phase and community resettlement and transition phase,

The project will involve the construction of 30 homes for Cogea villagers who lost their houses during TC Yasa in 2020.
