Ministry Looks For Solutions To Glue Sniffing, Street Kids

“We recognise that drug abuse, and particularly glue sniffing, is a significant issue. We have been in conversation with experts who have highlighted the difficulties involved in rehabilitating glue-sniffing addicted children,” Ms Kiran said.

The Ministry of Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation is engaging in discussions with various partners to address the issue of glue sniffing among children found loitering in towns and cities.

This problem has become increasingly prevalent as observed through the monitoring of the growing number of children on the streets of Suva and Nadi.

Assistant Minister for Women Sashi Kiran said rescuing and rehabilitating children from the streets was a challenging task.

“We recognise that drug abuse, and particularly glue sniffing, is a significant issue. We have been in conversation with experts who have highlighted the difficulties involved in rehabilitating glue-sniffing addicted children,” Ms Kiran said.

“We are exploring different models to effectively rehabilitate children who have been abusing glue for an extended period. It is important to note that some of these children have not only gained access to glue, they have also been abusing it for a considerable time.”
