Irresponsibility Causes Filthy Waterways

“We plead with people to keep their rubbish or dispose of them in correct places, but not to throw them like this. Any irresponsible behaviour concerning our rubbish will definitely affect others.”

Concern has been raised by a villager on the filth placed in waterways along Nausori Highlands road.

This waterways passage flows through the route of Yavuna, Dratabu to Nawaka.

Mata ni tikina (district representative) Nawaka Mosese Ronakuru said it had been a concern to them that some had also been offloading their rubbish in the river.

“We were on the way to Nausori highlands. We were at the S-bend, there is something like the river Yavuna in the tikina of Nawaka,” he said.

“Some people have offloaded their rubbish. All sorts of rubbish they throw in there. It is irresponsible behaviour by the culprits.”

Mr Ronakuru said they had been trying to safeguard their environment yet some have no regard for nature.

“We have other people who are doing this to the waterways. Those of us in Nawaka do use these waterways, but this has been rubbished,” he said.

“We plead with people to keep their rubbish or dispose of them in correct places, but not to throw them like this. Any irresponsible behaviour concerning our rubbish will definitely affect others.”

Nadi district officer Faiyaz Ali said his office was working closely with villagers along the Nausori Highland concerning the matter.

“We urge people to refrain from doing this at once. This also shows no civic pride,” he said.

“It has come to our attention and we are working closely with villages affected by such activities.”

Yesterday the Tikina o Nawaka, Police and other stakeholders had gathered at the DO’s office for further deliberation on their district.
