Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s abuse of office charge was amended by the Suva Magistrates Court.

The charge has been revised to “Attempted Perversion of the Course of Justice” as stated under Section 190 of the Crimes Act 2009.

Mr Bainimarama and suspended Commissioner of Police, Sitiveni Qiliho appeared before Magistrate Seini Puamau yesterday.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the accused, between July 2020 and September 2020 in Suva, made attempts to pervert the course of justice.

The accused allegedly instructed the former Commissioner of Police, Sitiveni Qiliho, to refrain from involving himself in the investigations related to the University of the South Pacific, which were initially reported on July 12, 2019.

The charges were made in relation to the termination of an active police investigation related to the University of the South Pacific in July 2019.

In court, Mr Bainimarama and Mr Qiliho both pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
