First Female Deputy PM Dies At 85

The legacy of Meraia Taufa Vakatale will live on in the hearts of many lives she had touched.

Ms Vakatale passed away on Saturday at the age of 85.

Condolence messages flooded social media as her close associates, including her former Adi Cakobau School colleagues, wrote of the impact she’s had in their lives, school, and the country.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka spoke highly of Ms Vakatale and her contribution to the country.

“We are saddened by the news. She has served the country very well. My condolences go out to her vanua,” Mr Rabuka said.

Ms Vakatale made history in 1997 as Fiji’s first female Deputy Prime Minister, serving in the Soqosoqo ni Vakavulewa ni iTaukei (SVT) Government.

ACS Old Girls Association president Ilisapeci Movono described the late Ms Vakatale as an audacious leader.

“For years Adi Cakobau School has been praised for its achievements. Many graduates have reached their highest potentials because of our pioneers like Ms Vakatale who have contributed to the quality education in the school.”

Ms Movono said Ms Vakatale’s leadership had impacted many in Fiji and around the world.

Ms Vakatale’s funeral service will be on Friday, June 30, 2023, at the Wesley Church on Butt Street, Suva at 9am.

She will be laid to rest at the Lovonilase cemetery in Suva.
