Seventy-year-old Rabindra Nath, is devastated after a fire destroyed his rented property at FNTC Road 1, Narere, at around 8pm on Sunday.

The $60,000 property consisted two flats, one occupied by a 64-year-old woman and her son, and the other by a couple and their daughter.

Mr Nath wasn’t aware of the fire until he saw one of his tenants running towards his house.

“By the time I came to the back, everything was destroyed. It was a horrible scene,” he said.

“I am glad that no one got hurt, but I am in despair right now because, this property cost a lot to build and it has been my bread and butter, supporting me and my wife.”

He said the cost of rebuilding the residential structure would be an added burden to him and his wife.

National Fire Authority

In a statement, the National Fire Authority suspected that the fire was caused by a burning candle placed on a plate on top of a chair.

NFA’s National Command Centre received an emergency call at 8.03pm last Sunday. The Valelevu Fire Station was alerted, and a five-member crew immediately responded and deployed to the scene, arriving at 8.14pm.

The Valelevu team, with support from a seven-member crew from Nakasi and a three-men crew from Suva Fire Station manning the 20,000-litre tanker, found the residential structure fully engulfed in flames on arrival.

It took fire crews more than 40 minutes to completely extinguish the flames, but the wood and corrugated iron structure was destroyed.
