A major renovation plan will force more than 50 tenants out of Yatu Lau Arcade in Suva.

It means business owners, some of which have operated for more than a decade, need to scout for locations to continue operation.

They have six months to vacate the building before renovation begins in February, 2024.

Owner, Yatu Lau Company Limited (YLCL), issued a letter to all the tenants on Tuesday, July 11, to clear out before December 31, 2023.

The company is one of the biggest provincial-based companies in Fiji.

The letter said the redevelopment works would affect their tenancy.

In fact, the letter noted that contractors and consultants were in the preparation phase for the one-year renovation.

Tenants have until September 30, 2023 to express their interest if they want to take up space at the arcade once the facelift is completed.

Feedback

But the news is not sinking in well for some business owners, especially when the flea market in Suva is said to be fully-occupied.

Salen Kumar and wife, Reshma Devi have been a long time tenants since 1998, and are worried the rent may increase when they return.

The couple own Kumar Keys, The Blades Barber Shop and Salen Ravneel Footwear.

“We have our own customers here,” said Ms Devi.
