MBABANE – A big blow.

This is the story of Green Mamba midfielder Mxolisi ‘Kudus’ Mkhonto, who is currently on a three-day assessment with  South  Africa’s DStv Premiership side Royal AM with the hope of signing for the club. The workaholic box-to-box midfielder left the country via Lavumisa Border Gate on Wednesday morning for the Dstv Premiership side and, according to reports, the midfielder was expected to feature in the team’s practice matches yesterday afternoon.

According to latest development surrounding the MTN Premier League winner’s move to ‘Thwihli Thwahla’ was that the DStv Premiership side could be banned by FIFA after failing to pay a former Kaizer Chiefs striker a sum understood to be around E12 million for terminating the forward’s contract, just two months after signing with the club which would put the transfer of the midfielder in jeopardy.

A source that did not want to reveal his identity mentioned that Royal AM could possibly face a hefty FIFA sanction after missing the deadline to pay striker Samir Nurkovic, which was on Monday. “Royal AM will possible face a FIFA ban which will make them not to sign any player which will put on hold  the move for Mxolisi Mkhonto who was destined to be signed by the club,” said the source.

Royal AM is a South African football club based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal that plays in the PSL. They play in DStv Premiership after purchasing a licence from Bloemfontein Celtic in August 2021 by Durban business woman Shauwn Mkhize and her son Andile Mpisane. They finished the season on position 11.

According to reports from South African publications, the Durban-based outfit was given until this past Monday to settle the debt enforced by the world governing body, for terminating the player’s contract prematurely. Nurkovic had initially joined Royal AM in July 2022 on a free transfer from Kaizer Chiefs for two seasons. But the club owned by businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize failed to pay the first three months of his salary and subsequently claimed Nurkovic had been injured, moving quickly to try to terminate the agreement within 30 days. The Green Mamba player could not be drawn for comment after his cellphone rang unanswered when called yesterday afternoon.
