Montserrado County Electoral District #17 Representative Hanson Kiazolu, who is also vying for the Senatorial seat of Grand Cape Mount County says Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC) has done extremely well for the people of Grand Cape Mount and Liberia in general.
He made the assertion on Thursday, May 11, 2023 when he served as phone in guest on the Truth Breakfast Show in Monrovia.
According to Lawmaker Kiazolu, Bea Mountain has over the years made huge social contributions to the county, as well as created job opportunities for citizens of Liberia.
Rep. Kiazolu also commended the Management of BMMC for giving thousands of United States Dollars as Clan Development Fund to its host communities to implement development projects.
“Besides social contributions to the county, Bea Mountain has created another mechanism to give money directly to the communities in which it operates “, he stated.
“And they told the communities the money given annually is for the communities to support their education, sanitation, and healthcare. That I saw it and there’s documentation on it, that is massive. I don’t know of the company doing that, you pay the social contributions to the county, but then they also look for another money and give it directly to the affected Communities. I don’t know which group is doing that, that’s massive”, Rep. Kiazolu added.
The Grand Cape Mount County Senatorial Aspirant believes Citizens of the county should not blame Bea Mountain for not getting direct benefits from these contributions, but rather the county’s leadership.
Lawmaker Kiazolu continues: “Even the contributions Bea Mountain makes, sometimes they go to county sitting and buy cars for superintendent, instead of investing the money into projects, like sanitation, health and education and even agriculture “, highlighted.
On the issue of protest against BMMC, Rep. Kiazolu also blamed the local leaders for their alleged involvement in extorting money from the citizens in the name of giving them jobs.
“Some of these protests are not caused by Bea Mountain, some of these protests are caused by the local authorities. I also sat with a citizen in that particular locality, and some women said you go for a job to the town chief, the town chief wants you to give him money, or the other person wants you to give him money, so they’re the ones blocking the opportunities for their people. Because every time Bea Mountain has space or a job, they send them to the leadership of the communities. The head of the community is the town chief. If the town chief decides to sell those opportunities, how will you protest against Bea Mountain for that”, Rep. Kiazolu inquired.
