Qld man dies after trying to save another man from a snake

A man who tried to save another man from a snake that had coiled around his ankle has died after he was bitten multiple times in central Queensland.

Paramedics responded to a call about 6.30pm on Saturday at Koumala, south of Mackay, with reports that a man in his 60s had been bitten several times.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said the victim was bitten on the chest and arm while trying to uncoil the snake from the man’s ankle.

He died at the scene, while the other man, also in his 60s, was taken to Mackay Base Hospital.

“Despite the best efforts of those on the scene, providing good CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator, the man was declared deceased at the scene,” QAS said.

It was unknown at this stage what type of snake it was.

QAS was expected to provide further information on Sunday morning.
