A man has been arrested after allegedly smashing a security barrier in an attempt to break into the ABC’s Ultimo headquarters in Sydney.

Police were called to the broadcaster’s Harris Street building at 5.30pm on Wednesday and arrested a 48-year-old man, a statement provided by NSW Police said.

The man was taken to Surry Hills police station and charged with destroying or damaging property, and entering prescribed premises without a lawful excuse.

Staff reported issues with the broadcaster’s security systems on Thursday morning, including at its Melbourne Southbank site.

Staff with surnames starting from M-Z could not access the ABC building in Melbourne, according to several sources at the site.

Police said he was refused bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday.
