Australia news LIVE: Top public servant sent messages to Liberal powerbroker; Human rights boss wants wider COVID review

Greens senator Nick McKim has spoken about revelations Home Affairs department secretary Michael Pezzullo sent messages to a Liberal powerbroker in a bid to promote conservatives, oust enemies and revamp the national security regime.

McKim was mentioned in the messages, when Pezzullo expressed his dislike of Senate estimates hearing committees.

“No hits out of estimates,” he observed in October 2017, though Greens senator Nick McKim “called me a fascist so I will go back to polishing my jackboots and stroking my leathers!”

“Look I don’t really mind what Mr Pezzullo thinks of me, there are far bigger issues to be dealt with here,” McKim said on ABC radio this morning.

He said the public service code of conduct required public servants in senior positions to be open and accountable.

“Mr Pezzullo has failed both of those tests, and his position really now as secretary of the Home Affairs department is completely untenable and if he’s not working on his resignation letter to Prime Minister Albanese he certainly should be.”
