Syrian Community Calls Meeting with Government Officials to Address Rising Crime and Business Threats

The Syrian community, still in a state of shock following the tragic shooting death of one of their members, has arranged a meeting with government officials to address the escalating crime situation and the increasing threat faced by local businesses.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday night, May 23, at 8 p.m., at the Orthodox Church located within the Antigua Syrian Club grounds in Langfords.

The Honorary Syrian Consul is organizing the gathering on behalf of the Syrian community.

Attorney-General and Minister of Public Safety and Legal Affairs, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin; Tourism Minister and Rural North MP, Charles “Max” Fernandez; and Minister of Education, Daryl Matthew, are expected to be in attendance.

These government representatives will also address the family members of the recent homicide victim, 25-year-old Roudi Shmaly, who resided in Utopia Place, Sir George Walter Highway, as well as the broader Syrian community.

Shmaly was fatally shot during a robbery at the Pick n Mix Mart on DeSouza Road on Monday, May 22, around 1:10 p.m. He arrived at the hospital unresponsive and was pronounced dead approximately 25 minutes later.

Reports indicate that he suffered gunshot wounds to the back and head. Allegedly, a spent 9 mm shell was discovered at the crime scene.

The police are actively seeking additional assistance in the ongoing investigation into this recent homicide. Sources suggest that at least six individuals have been detained on suspicion of murder.
