Shop Stewards Build Capacity Through Training

St John’s, Antigua – Shop Stewards employed in the transportation, aviation, and security sectors are the latest to benefit from a series of workshops organized by the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU).

The training sessions are designed to bolster the skills of shop stewards with a view of increasing the overall quality of their contributions to the industrial relations process.

In opening last week’s workshop, ABWU General Secretary, David Massiah, said the Union was only as strong as its shop stewards.

He added that the Union had an obligation to ensure that its members were given the tools and the opportunities to function effectively.

The General Secretary said the workshop aimed to go beyond the basic functions of shop stewards and provide an opportunity for participants to build capacity in their understanding of labour relations.

The two modules covered were the Collective Bargaining Process and Division “C” of the Labour Code. Deputy Labour Commissioner, Pascal Kentish, conducted the training.

Following the workshop, several participants were eager to share their feedback. “I appreciate Mr. Kentish’s delivery and his skill set.

He is very knowledgeable about the labour code and I’m looking forward to learning more,” one participant shared.

Another attendee noted that the discussions on occupational injuries were particularly interesting and informative.

According to Senior Industrial Relations and Training Officer at the ABWU, Hazel Luke, the Union has prepared an extensive and exciting training calendar for 2023.
