Opposition UPP Protests for Commission of Inquiry, Disputes Legal Opinion on Governor General’s Authority

The opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) is in the second day of its four-day picket outside the Governor General’s Office, urging him to establish a Commission of Inquiry. They are specifically focused on the Antigua Airways/African migrant issue.

The government maintains that the Governor General can only call a Commission of Inquiry with Cabinet advice, as stated in a legal opinion by Gregory Jones KC. However, two members of the Opposition disagree with this opinion.

Leon ‘Chaku’ Symister argues that the Governor General has the right to consult anyone, and the people have the right to choose who they listen to.

Pearl Quinn-Williams believes that the Governor General has the authority to call an inquiry, disregarding the opinions of foreign attorneys.

The legal opinion refers to relevant sections of the Constitution and the Commission of Inquiry Act.

The UPP plans to take various actions to persuade the Governor General. They claim there is no effective oversight system in Antigua and Barbuda apart from the Commission of Inquiry Act.
