SOURCE: REAL NEWS – Six Cameroon nationals who recently departed Antigua have been apprehended by immigration authorities in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) for entering the country illegally.
Initially, they had expected to meet an accomplice upon arrival but had to seek refuge in the bush due to unforeseen circumstances.
After enduring challenging conditions, including mosquito bites, the Cameroonians dialed 911 for emergency assistance.
Immigration officials responded, resulting in the West Africans being taken into police custody.
Separately, another group, believed to have left Antigua on May 15, is currently in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands (USVI).
They have reportedly filed for asylum and are awaiting transportation to the US mainland.
Some of the individuals who arrived in the Virgin Islands earlier have already proceeded to the United States.
One member of the May 15 group confirmed being in the USVI but declined to provide a recorded statement, expressing concerns about jeopardizing the situation of fellow Cameroonians in Antigua.
Meanwhile, the authorities in St. Thomas have requested the gathering of all Cameroonians present there for a collective meeting.
Last year, over 900 West Africans arrived in Antigua on controversial flights.
However, local sources indicate that less than 100 of them remain on the island, with speculation that many have embarked on illegal boat trips to other territories as part of their onward journey to the United States.
