Father and son die on suspicion of hate crimes by Armor Arbury

Sentences are pending for three men convicted of federal hate crimes in the death of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery.

Travis McMichael and his father, Gregory McMichael, who fired the fatal shot on February 23, 2020, were sentenced to life in prison on Monday.

Gregory McMichael, 66, told the Arbery family in court:

Travis McMichael, 36, made no statement.

Their neighbor, William "Rody" Bryan, was sentenced later in the day and faces life.

Three white men were convicted in February and a federal jury ruled that Arbery had been tracked down and killed because he was black.

After less than four hours of deliberation, the jury found all three men as racist motivated by civil rights obstruction and attempted kidnapping of Arbery. Convicted. Travis McMichael and his father were convicted of carrying and brandishing a weapon while committing a violent crime. Travis McMichael was also convicted of firing a firearm in connection with a violent crime.

Mr. and Mrs. McMichaels saw him jogging in their neighborhood and Pickup chased him in his truck. Joining the chase in his truck, Brian stops Arbery from escaping and records cell phone footage of Travis McMichael shooting Arbery with a shotgun.

During the trial, prosecutors released text messages and social media posts in which Travis McMichael and Brianrepeatedly used racist slurs. Witnesses also testified that they heard both McMichael make racist comments. All of the men are serving life sentences for murdering Arbery.
