David Sedaris of Alaska, Land of Eagles, No Tie

Humorist David Sedaris has some summer travel tips:

We know who we got COVID from, but ultimately we don't. Someone from Alaska, I think. And that's okay.  If you haven't been there, you should go, even just for wildlife.

One afternoon in Kodiak, a pilot offered to take me on a coffin-sized plane. "What are you interested in?" he asked.

I have already seen countless eagles, so I replied "Bear".

"We don't get together much at this time of year," he said.  "But I could fly over my parents' house, but I could see it instead."

So I did.

In many towns I've been to, there were no places to buy ties. If you go to a restaurant or a grocery store, everyone is dressed to kill something and is bathed in its blood.

There were junk piles in people's yards: old water heaters, outboard motors. I mentioned this to someone. She explained that everything had to be shipped from the 48 contiguous states of the United States.

It was a sense of community among the people living in Oh, it exists everywhere on some level. If my neighbors in New York ask me to go to the grocery store, I will. If their apartment is flooded, I will provide a spare room (overnight). But we are not in the wilderness together. You're not hundreds of miles away from the nearest emergency room. So it's good that he got COVID there and then returned to New York. Hospitals are like eagles. Hospitals suck, at least in my neighborhood. I don't need only me My COVID was like a mild cold.

That's all I brought back from Alaska. Also, a beautiful bracelet given to me by a man in Anchorage. I do not have a reason. he just did

It takes a few smart people to convince everyone across the state to be great. The pilot who showed me his family home, the stranger at this airport, a Jewish woman from Juneau named Libby, who claimed to be one of the "Frozen Chosen" girlfriends. rice field.

I mean Alaska. you have to go!
