Airlines cancel 1,000 more US flights on Friday

(CNN) — Major flight cancellations on day two after thunderstorms hit major east coast airports on Thursday It has spread.

As of 12:45 pm ET Friday, flight tracking site FlightAware showed that more than 1,000 flights have been canceled in the United States. Newark Liberty International Airport and Reagan National Airport outside Washington, D.C. topped the list of cancellations.

On Thursday, the US Transportation Security Administration screened more than 2.3 million passengers at airport security checkpoints across the country. That's about 87% of the same weekday in 2019.

The US Department of Transportation on Wednesday proposed rules that would expand the circumstances under which airline passengers can receive refunds.

The proposal comes amid a flood of complaints from passengers seeking refunds from airlines since the outbreak of the pandemic.
