Drama as Rukungiri DEO rain punches on inspector of schools

By Our Reporter

There was drama in Rukungiri District administration block in the department of Education and sports at Rukungiri District headquarters on Monday last week when a scuffle ensued between the District Education Officer, Jackson Turyahumura and the Principal inspector of schools Lydia Tushemereirwe over UNEB registration allowances.  And in the process punches rained on hapless Lydia.

Eye witnesses say the scuffle resulted after an abrupt meeting that was called by DEO Turyahumura and inspector of schools, Tushemereirwe.

In the meeting, the DEO reportedly tasked the inspector to account for funds meant to compensate those who took part in the UNEB registration exercise.

During the meeting, it is alleged the DEO accused the inspector of not giving a satisfactory answer.

She reportedly denied any responsibility and claimed that it was the Rukungiri district Association of Head Teachers that was in charge of this exercise and not her office.

After a brief verbal exchange, the DEO reportedly lost his temper and rained punches on the inspector until she was rescued by other inspectors who had earlier heard the verbal exchange.  The inspector has since registered a case of assault at Rukungiri Central Police.

However, when our moles tried to investigate this matter we were told that it was contrary, saying that Tushemereirwe was just humiliated by the DEO, and that she never experienced physical harm.

That she instead experienced psychological harm and chest ache as a result.

Another source who preferred anonymity, claimed that this misunderstanding has been ongoing for some time revolving around alleged kickbacks received from schools.

The DEO and inspector also reportedly accuse each other of mismanagement.

WIDER PICTURE

It is believed that the genesis of this was prior to appointment of Tushemereirwe as the inspector of schools something the DEO was not comfortable with.

Top district administrators approached for this story have preferred to remain tight lipped since the matter was scheduled for further investigations.

Our calls to the DEO went unanswered.

The DEO is the son of soil to Rukungiri district all the way from Bikurungu Bwambara Sub-county.

Sources say their son is prone to controversies and has been called out on multiple occasions for his lack of public cooperation and poor public image.

They recalled when Turyahumura borrowed building supplies from Rukungiri’s business tycoon James of Kamwe Kamwe hardware. And when the latter tried to collect his money after Turyahumura allegedly refused to pay, almost kicked him while claiming that he had never borrowed anything from the guy. This, according to them, is giving them a bad image back home in Bwambara.
