Saint Lucia Wins OECS Invitational Boxing Championships Title

Saint Lucia emerged victorious in the OECS Invitational Boxing Championships Revival, held from July 28 to 29, at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Facility, with an impressive all-round performance from its team of contenders.

Team 758 triumphed with a haul of 7 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze medals, ahead of Guyana and Guadeloupe. A total of about 70 boxers from the OECS and other regional territories   competed at the event, which provided much thrills and excitement for the fans and patrons who turned out to witness the contest.

Garvin Donaie was one of the exceptional performers to win Gold at the OECS Boxing Championships by defeating David Florimond of Martinique.  Donaie won his bout in a record time of 45 seconds in the first round by technical knockout over his opponent.

Another sterling performance came from 16-year old John Didier from the Vieux Fort community, who on his debut fight knocked out his Grenadian opponent to win Gold.

While expressing his elation with the results, Sports Minister Kenson Casimir stated,” Our boxing programme in Vieux Fort continues to be a viable alternative to our young people in the south. Hats off to David Shakes Christopher and the coaching staff at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as we continue to change lives through sports.”
