Former soldier sentenced to six years for drug trafficking

Punakha court sentenced a 27-year-old man from Bumdeling Gewog, Trashiyangtse to six years in prison for illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances by the Punakha court on May 4. 

The unemployed former soldier was detained on February 17 morning by the Punakha police while conducting routine drug checks in Barp Gewog.

The police discovered 144 pieces of SP+ in the dashboard of his car. 

During the investigation, the convict admitted to hiding 1,247 pieces of SP+ at his wife’s house at Tekizampa in Wangduephodrang. 

He admitted to selling three sheets of SP+ to three people.

In a statement to the police, the convict had said that he purchased the contraband worth Nu 10,100 from Jaigaon on February 13. 

The suspect tested positive during a rapid drug test. The Punakha police then charged him with illicit trafficking of NDPS. 

Meanwhile, the convict has 10 days to appeal to the high court. 

To date, Punakha police registered two cases related to the trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
