Police willing to help PSVs with security

The Barbados Police Service (BPS) is willing to assist privately-owned public service vehicles (PSVs) with security, particularly in light of the latest brazen attempted armed robbery of a ZR driver.

The assurance has come from Commissioner of Police Richard Boyce who stressed that security support for the PSV sector did not have to be of a physical nature alone.

“Security can also work in terms of advice. We do it for homeowners…we can do likewise for persons who operate PSVs,” he said during a news briefing on Thursday to update the country on the crime situation and plans to police this year’s Crop Over Festival.

“In fact, that is the first thing that we can do to assist them – allay their fears and make them become security conscious in how to deal with matters when they come up, and how to protect yourselves from would-be robbers and such like. So, yes, it can work, and we will be willing to engage the persons from that entity in some discussion.”                                                                                                                                                                       Earlier this week, PSV drivers and conductors called for police to develop a crime prevention programme for them, following the attempted robbery of one of their colleagues, Marlon Tempro.

“The Barbados Police Service needs to come together with the PSV operators and give us some tips on how to deal with security issues. The Government, the Attorney General need to do more. All we get is lip service. They need to do more to combat the crime in Barbados because it has gone to a level where something is happening every day,” one PSV operator Trevor Lloyd told Barbados TODAY.
