Thousands more US flights canceled or delayed

US airlines canceled or delayed thousands of flights over the weekend. Due to bad weather and understaffing, passengers.

More than 7,000 domestic flights were delayed on Saturday, according to FlightAware data, with about 650 canceled. A further 8,100 flights were delayed and 950 canceled on Sunday, according to the Flight Tracker website.The tarmac chaos continued on Monday, with more than 500 flights canceled and 2,800 delayed by mid-afternoon. . 

Airport piles are affecting all types of travelers, including professional athletes. WNBA player Nneka Ogwumike tweeted on Monday that her team's weekend flight was delayed three times hers. Ogumike said she and her Los Angeles Sparks teammates waited for hours in the hope that the flight would be back on schedule, but to no avail. 

"This is the first time in 11 seasons that I've had to sleep at the airport," she said, leading to the team's flight being ultimately cancelled. "It was just a matter of time. So half of us are sleeping at the airport. Half of us are in the hotel because there weren't enough rooms."

Virginia animal scientist Sabrina Amorim tweeted Sunday about flight delays, cancellations and plane crashes, venting her frustrations with Delta Airlines. . She waits to speak with a customer service representative.

In the chaos that will ruin the summer travel season, there is one silver lining for passengers. It's expedited refunds. The U.S. Department of Transportation has proposed new regulations . If a traveler pays with a credit card and her flight is delayed by 3 hours, she can get a refund within 7 days. 6 hours for domestic flights and 6 hours for international flights. An agency official said he is seeking public comment for 90 days before finalizing the rule.

Last weekend's bad weather was part of the reason for the spate of delays and cancellations. Thunderstorms hit most of New Mexico through Saturday, along with areas of Arizona and Colorado, but heavy rains and flash floods hit the Chicago area and much of the Midwest on Sunday.  60}

Bad weather forces airlines to postpone travel until it passes.
