This Minor League Groundout Is Really Strange Baseball Play

Talk about ground out.

The Columbus Clippers and Toledo Mud Hens produced him one of the most unique plays in baseball Wednesday night.

In the bottom of the second, Clippers third baseman Ernie Clement drove Joey Wentz's 0-1 pitch into... the ground.

Literally.

Clement seemed surprised by the embedded ball and thought Mud Hens catcher Dustin Garneau was on it and tagged Clement.

This play seemed to surprise everyone, including the broadcast team.

"Clement, by the time he loosened up... it wasn't... Are you kidding me?" said the team's play-by-play announcer, watching the play. "Watching the replay here, the ball didn't bounce at all. It got buried in the dirt in the infield. A third of the ball is submerged!"

Triple-A Affiliate of Detroit Tigers The Mud Hens, the top minor league team, defeated the Clippers, MLB's Cleveland Guardians, 4-0.
