Panthers' Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold quarterback race has clear favorites

With the Carolina Panthers hotly contested to start the quarterback job, a strong contender appears to have emerged.

Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield are vying to be his QB1 for Carolina during his training camp. Mayfield has the upper hand right now, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"They're splitting up the reps. Some have him one, some have him two. Rapoport talks about Darnold and Mayfield on Monday's 'Good Morning Football.' rice field. "The reps were pretty much the same, but it's clear it's Baker Mayfield's job to lose in Carolina."

After Cleveland acquired Deshawn Watson, the Browns Mayfield, who was traded to the Panthers last month for a conditional fifth-round pick in 2024, said "wow" many times throughout training camp and, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, a "flash" replay. Darnold has been safer on the ball this offseason and produced more consistent numbers, but it's Mayfield who really shined during practice.

Mayfield so far And Darnold Panthers coach Matt Rule insists "a significant decision" on quarterback positions won't be made until after Aug. 19, when Carolina faces the New England Patriots in the second round. preseason game. The team will also host two joint practices that weekend in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

"I'm not going to give you a timetable for quarterback positions until I get back from Patriots week," Rule said shortly after Saturday's scrimmage. It's a real litmus test for the NBA. It's going to really show where the players are." Both last season were plagued by nagging injuries, which made it difficult to post consistent numbers.

In his debut season with Carolina, Darnold threw his nine touchdowns against his 13 interceptions and a shoulder injury kept him sidelined for a month. As for Mayfield, he threw 17 his touchdowns and 13 his interceptions after scoring his 26 points the year before. This was likely due to his own shoulder injury that persisted throughout the season.
