Solange Knowles is the second black woman to have a score commissioned by N.Y.C. ballet

Solange Knowles is composing original music for the New York City Ballet, the singer announced on Tuesday. She is her third woman and the second black woman to have a score commissioned by the ballet.

Knowles said that the production will be accompanied by Gianna Reisen's choreography. At 18, Gianna Raisen became the youngest person ever to choreograph the ballet in 2017, according to Playbill.

This piece is part of the annual Fall Debut at fashion gala. September 28th at Lincoln Center. The event, chaired by Laverne Cox and Andy Cohen among others, honors actress Sarah Jessica Parker, who serves as Vice Chair of the Ballet. 

The work will also be performed in four shows in October and five in May.

Lido Pimienta, who composed "Embrace the Sky" in 2021, was the first black woman to write a ballet score, a ballet spokesperson said Wednesday in a statement to CBS News.

"I'm so proud of Solange," Knowles' mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, wrote on Instagram on Monday. "She's always kicking in doors and opening doors for other artists of color." 

During her decades-long career in the music industry, Knowles has released her four solo albums in her studio. According to her Grammy Awards website, her first studio album was released when she was 16, and six years later her first Top 10 album. "Sol-Angel and The Hadley St. Dreams" followed. Her 2016 album "A Seat at the Table" was her #1 on the Billboard 200. Her album lead her single "Cranes in the Sky" won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Her Performance. This was Knowles' first Grammy nomination and her first ever win.
