New York mayor condemns Texas governor's 'horrific' bus rides for immigrants

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Sunday that he was busing immigrants into the Democratic-controlled city of Texas. He blamed Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The US called Abbott's actions "unimaginable".

Adams made the remark Sunday at the Port Authority Bus Terminal as he met his bus carrying 14 asylum seekers from the Texas border town. Their arrival followed his 40 others who arrived on Friday. 

Only a minority of asylum seekers have been deported from border towns since April when Abbott began bussing migrants} Title 42is a pandemic-related emergency policy that enables border agents to expedite the deportation of migrants. 

After welcoming his family to New York City, Adams accused Abbott of using his family as political pawns. .

's official Twitter account said, "When we think of this country, we have always welcomed a country that has always opened its doors to those fleeing persecution and other intolerable conditions." '' Adams said. "This governor doesn't do that in Texas, but he's going to send the right message, the right tone, to be here for these families."   

Adams said Bass Some of the families on board said they were forced to stay there and weren't allowed to go where they wanted to go. 

"This is terrifying when you consider that the Governor of Texas has been putting them across the border for months on a bus to nowhere." said Adams. 

In a statement Friday, Abbott defended Operation Lone Star, claiming it closed "a dangerous gap left by the Biden administration's refusal to secure its borders."

"Since the beginning of Operation Lone Star, multi-agency efforts have resulted in more than 290,700 immigrant arrests and his 18,000 criminal arrests, with more than 15,400 felony reports." Abbott's statement said: “In the fight against fentanyl, the DPS has seized more than 325.9 million lethal doses statewide. Since starting the mission, we have transported more than 6,500 immigrants to the nation's capital, and now New York City, to overwhelmed border communities."

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Friday Denied DC Mayor Muriel Bowser's request for the National Guard to accept immigrants bused into Washington, D.C.

Defense The Department of Defense said providing the requested assistance would adversely affect the readiness of the DC National Guard and adversely affect the guards and their constituents, the U.S. defense official said in a statement.
