'Locke & Key' Season 3 Review: A Thrilling and Satisfying Ending

When presented with the third and final season of a series on Netflix, the first and perhaps most important question is whether the ending is the actual ending, or whether the audience will will be left behind. to a painful cliffhanger for the rest of their natural lives. In order not to dwell on the point,Rock & Key Season 3 is not the most thrilling and emotional installment ever… Rock & Key Season 3 lives up to Locke & Keyand is one of the best seasons of the fantasy series released this year.

Anyway, let's take a big step forward and recap what happened as we entered Season 3. Over the course of two seasons, the Rock family — Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), Bourde (Jackson Robert Scott), and mother Nina (Darby Stanchfield) — use a magic key to control demonic powers. Fought against a powerful Dodge (Laysla de Oliveira). At the end of Season 2, they finally defeat Dodge, but at the cost of Tyler's girlfriend's life. When things turn around in Season 3, Tyler is doing construction work far away. increase. Eiji uses magic, and thanks to his failsafe (no one over 18 can remember his keys), he is blissfully unaware of what happened in Matheson, Massachusetts.

Meanwhile, Nina has a memory that restores her memories. I would like to participate. What they don't know is that lurking in the background is Captain Frederick Gideon (Kevin Durand), a demon-infected British Revolutionary War soldier who revived in last season's cliffhanger. about it.

Unlike Dodge, who lashed out at multiple projects at the same time, Gideon is a blunt weapon dedicated to obtaining the Key at all costs. Durand's energy permeates the entire season, with co-showrunners Meredith his Averill and Carlton his cues omitting his setting for the table he was stuck in for part of season one, and bringing new audiences to the show in season two. Welcomed. from the first minute. If you haven't watched it before, you shouldn't start here. But if you're already a fan, the payoffs and callbacks scattered throughout the season are staggering. Unlike Lockes, this is a non-stop win for fans.

This season will be a big win for fans of the show as well as comics. Pretty early on, Lock & Key deviated from the plot of the comic by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. But season 3 loops back in multiple ways, including a nearly verbatim sequence from him in one of the series' most admired issues. And a standout episode in the second half of the season, co-written by Hill and Cuse, answers longtime fan questions about his one of Keys in a gripping and heartbreaking way.

But at its core is the warmth and humanity of the cast. Stanchfield once again loops back into Nina's alcoholism, but in a fresh way that ties into Key's magic. Her glee at finding the key is contagious. Jessup plays Tyler's humor and heartbreak in equal measure, and to the writer's credit, they have him continue to delve into the death of his girlfriend Jackie (Genevieve Kang) while seeking well-deserved pity. Scott continues to stand out as Bode, being able to play several different modes throughout an equally hilarious and terrifying season without screwing things up. increase. And Jones, who rose to stardom thanks to his Oscar-winning CODA, not only continued in the leadership role he stepped into in Season 2, but was able to sing again and again. will — certainly thrilling for fans of that movie.

Also credit to Averill and Cuse is the balanced use of his cast of support. In particular, Sherry Soam returned to Matheson as her gym teacher Ellie Whedon, and it's clear that her time spent trapped in her demonic dimension has changed her. Every choice Saum makes emphasizes this plot her point. And Coby Byrd as his son Rufus Whedon is phenomenal this time around... Fans of the book have been waiting for Rufus to be the hero.

Even characters like filmmaker Savinis, especially Asha Bromfield as Zaddy Wells and Jessie Camacho as Doug Brazel, are doing fun things this season and are short-lived. Even the screen time fills their characters with inner depth and meaning... other characters also make standout turns. Given that their roles delve into spoiler territory, it's probably best for viewers to discover the depth for themselves. Suffice it to say that each actor involved gets enough time to exaggerate their stuff and give their character's arc a rewarding end. Without delving into it too much, much of the season is a rollercoaster-riding battle between The Rock and Gideon, but the finale gives equal hours of action and emotion... viewers might want to keep Tissue Key. There are multiple tear-jerking moments in the final episode, so it's close, upbeat, hopeful, and dares before the magical ending.

Especially when you watch the series finale , to cover it more broadly, I can't help but be impressed with how it got here. After a series of failed movies and two failed pilots (one for FOX, the other for Hulu), Averill and Cuse create the first season of Locke & KeyNot only did we do it, we succeeded. It's all home for the final season and one of the most emotionally satisfying finales I've seen in a long time. Doing it for a comic book adaptation that had a satisfying ending in itself, and doing it in a completely new and fresh way is an award-worthy achievement.

Is it a pity that lock & key ends? Of course. But at the end of this season, we heard the metaphorical keys click with a satisfying click, givingLock & Key a fitting finale. It is a pleasure to know.

Rock&Key Season 3 premieres on his Wednesday, August 10th on Netflix.
