Iraq sentenced to 4 life sentences in January attack on Baghdad airport

An Iraqi court Sunday sentenced four people to death in a case that attacked Baghdad airport earlier this year, damaging two empty civilian planes on the tarmac. Sentenced to life imprisonment.

This is despite dozens of rocket and drone attacks primarily targeting military bases housing foreign forces at airports and other parts of the country. It is the first judgment in such cases.

Sunday's conviction was that there were no casualties in the January 28 rocket attack on Baghdad International Airport.

According to a statement from Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council, the court "imposed life imprisonment on four criminals" involved in the attack.

The statement does not provide details regarding the prisoners' identities or political affiliations.

Frequent attacks on bases housing foreign - primarily US - military contingents, rarely claimed, have been blamed on pro-Iranian groups, many of them in Iraq.

US drones killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and his Iraqi deputy Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in 2020. Attacks against US national interests surged in January, marking the second anniversary of the 2020 drone attacks.
