Buck Showalter lashes out at first runner Mets over 'umpire error'

The Mets geared up for their first rally on Sunday afternoon, and Buck Showalter called for a replay review to help the cause.

They won the challenge, but still lost a run.

The sequence in question had no outs and Brandon Nimmo was on first base. Sterling Marte hit a ground ball to second base. Ehire Adrianza charged up and defended the ball as Nimmo ran towards him. Adrianza slides in. He appears to tag Nimmo and throws to first base, but is too late to complete the double play.

Braves first baseman Matt Olson threw back to second base, and shortstop Dansby Swanson tagged Nemo (who had not reached the bag), but second base umpire Jeff Nelson gave the ball. It was already in Nemo.

Showalter disputed the call and replays showed his Adrianza tagged his Nimmo with an empty glove instead of the ball he was holding in his right hand. After a long delay, crew chief Nelson announced that Nemo was actually safe in the first tag, but was eventually out in the second tag from Swanson.

Back on the field with Nelson Showalter's anger after a long conversation. Somehow, Showalter managed to avoid an ejection — arguing that a contested replay decision should automatically result in an ejection — which was his first as manager of the Mets.

"If there were only two or three pitchers in the bullpen, I probably wouldn't have watched the rest of the game." 5-2 win

There was a similar play earlier this season when the Mets were in Miami, but a replay review rewarded Nemo second base for the example. 48}

"It's bothering me," said Showalter. "It's very inconsistent."

Nemo said he asked for an explanation after the inning the Mets didn't score.

"I'm [called] so I'm not going to do anything," he said Nimmo. "So I got up and what they told me was I got up and advanced to second base. So... a throw to second base, and a tag to catch me, that put me out." We're a little confused, but that's for sure."
