Wild moment man PUNCHES a police officer in the face after being pepper-sprayed in western Sydney

Shocking footage has resurfaced of a man in western Sydney punching a police officer in the face after being pepper sprayed.

The video, captured outside a travel agent in Merrylands, shows a bearded man being arrested by an officer with several men in the background watching on.

The policeman repeatedly tells the man to get on the ground before spraying him in the face as he recoils before hitting the officer and running away.

It's understood the footage, which has gone viral on social media this week, was taken before Sydney was sent into lockdown to combat a Covid outbreak.

Residents living in Merrylands, which falls under the Cumberland local government area, are required to wear masks outdoors.

The resurfaced footage comes amidst rising tensions between police and two million people locked-down in eight hotspot LGAs in Sydney's west and south-west.

NSW has called in the Australian Defence Force to enforce the hard lockdown, with 300 ADF personnel sent to help boost the NSW Police Force's operational footprint.

Shocking footage has re-emerged of a man in western Sydney punching a police officer in the face after being pepper sprayed

The video, which was filmed by a giggling female friend on Pitt Street in Merrylands, shows the officer holding the man to a wall telling him to get on the ground.

The man, wearing a white shirt and white hat, tells the policeman not to touch him and refuses to comply.

Two men believed to be friends of the man watch on close by in the background as the cop continues to ask him to get on the ground.

'You're not allowed to touch me,' the man says.

He then pulls out his pepper spray and discharges it in the face of the man who immediately turns away.

The woman filming the incident then screams before the man stands up and swings at the policeman, hitting him in the face.

He then turns and flees the situation as the woman filming screams: 'Oh my god'.

NSW Police are looking into the footage.
